Baystate Medical Center (BMC), in Springfield, Mass., is an academic, research, and teaching hospital that serves as the western campus of Tufts University School of Medicine. It is the only Level 1 trauma center in western Massachusetts, treating the most critical and urgent cases in the region. BMC is home to the second-busiest emergency department in Massachusetts.
National Recognition
- The American Nurses Credentialing Center designated Baystate a Magnet hospital for nursing excellence.
- Baystate is the only hospital in the nation to win the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence four consecutive times.
- Because of the hospital’s superior performance and willingness to share innovations and practical ideas, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement designated Baystate a mentor hospital in its 5 Million Lives Campaign.

BMC is widely recognized for its commitment to its community, seen in programs such:
- The Baystate Springfield Educational Partnership, which prepares area students to succeed in careers in health care
- The Baystate Neighbors program, which helps Baystate employees buy homes—and, in doing so, support the local economy.
Research and Education
- Beyond its own research activities, BMC collaborates with the University of Massachusetts Amherst to bring the benefits of biomedical technology and research to the region through the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute.
- BMC is home to one of only 39 American College of Surgeons-accredited Level 1 Comprehensive Education Institutes in the world.
Building for the Future
Construction of a new, 600,000-square-foot facility, featuring a state-of-the-art Heart and Vascular Center and patient rooms with ample natural light, modern amenities and comfortable space for family members and visitors, is now underway on the hospital’s Springfield campus.
