To get started, call 413-794-7020 to register for our free educational seminar.

Next steps for the Non-surgical program as part of the  Comprehensive Adult Weight Management Program at Baystate Medical CenterWhen you call, you will be asked for your height and weight to verify that your BMI (body mass index) meets the basic criteria for weight loss. Calculate your BMI. This 2-hour group seminar is your first step and takes place on the main campus of BMC, 759 Chestnut St, Springfield, MA 01199 in the Wesson Building, Lundy Board Room. The seminar is designed to help you make an informed decision about which weight loss program is right for you. The non surgical portion of the seminar lasts about 1 hour and the surgical portion goes the whole 2 hours. There is time at the end of the session for our experts to answer your questions.

Nutrition Component

After you attend the seminar you will be asked to book an appointment with a nutritionist. During this appointment, you will meet with the registered dietitian to begin learning the nutrition, eating behaviors, lifestyle and exercise habits necessary for successful weight loss. This is a 1 hour appointment.  This will be followed by an additional 30 minute medically supervised nutrition counseling appointments to follow up on your goals and progress.

After you have completed these initial appointments, you will continue attending support groups and individual follow-up appointments with your medical doctor and nutritionist as necessary.

Behavior Component

After meeting with the nutritionist, you will meet with one of our psychologists to discuss ways your mental health may be affecting your eating habits. The psychologist will help you identify your strengths that can help you achieve and maintain your weight loss goals. This is a 1 to 2 hour appointment.

Exercise Component

Our exercise specialist will help to connect you to the resources in our community that promote physical activity. She teaches some of our exercise education workshops on the importance of exercise, how to overcome barriers to getting active and where to go to be active. If needed she is also able to meet with patients to discuss individual concerns and questions.

We have a growing partnership with the Springfield and Wilbraham YMCA to offer discounted memberships for our patients and their families. They also offer some personal training sessions to help you adjust to a gym setting.
