Welcome to the Baystate Adult Weight Management Practice. At this time, the practice is designed for patients with a Body Mass Index (BMI) ≥ 35. (Find your BMI.) We are here to help you achieve your weight loss goals. We are a multidisciplinary practice. Our team consists of physicians, dieticians, psychologists, and exercise trainers who specialize in weight management. It is very important that each of our team members evaluate you to lay the groundwork for your long-term success.
So you can better determine if our program will meet your needs, you must attend an information session before scheduling your first appointment. Please call 413-794-1500 to schedule.
Your initial evaluation will occur at Baystate Medical Center on Springfield 2.
This appointment will last approximately 1½-2 hours.
You will fill out an initial questionnaire to help us better understand the medical conditions and underlying problems that may be associated with your weight.
You will have a complete evaluation by a physician who may order additional tests and blood work.
You will also have a complete dietary evaluation by a registered dietician who will consider your current dietary routine and explore your previous diet attempts. Based on that evaluation, we will create your initial dietary plan.
Psychologist and Physical Rehabilitation Specialist Visits
At the end of this initial visit, we will have you meet with one of our psychologists within a few weeks, and a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist if you have any significant physical problems that may limit exercise.
During your visit with the psychologist, you will discuss the ways that your mental health may be making it harder for you to lose weight. The psychologist will also help analyze your strengths that could be used to help you achieve your weight loss goals. You should expect this visit to last 1-2 hours.
Your visit with the physical rehabilitation specialist will address:
Your fitness level
Your history in physical activity
Any underlying conditions that may inhibit your ability to exercise
Appropriate exercise for you, depending on your limitations.
Once all your initial evaluations are completed, you will have a follow-up visit with the physician and dietician.
We will discuss with you a variety of possible options including:
Group weight loss programs
Individualized dietary plans
When appropriate, weight loss medication and liquid diet
Ongoing office visits to help you with your progress.
If we think you are a candidate for bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, we will discuss it with you and refer you to a Baystate bariatric surgeon if you like.
We will work together with you to decide the approach that is best for you.
