PREPARING FOR THORACIC SURGERY

Thoracic Preoperative Teaching Program 

If you have thoracic surgery scheduled, we invite you to attend

this free class to prepare for the experience and manage your expectations.

Better prepared patients have better outcomes and experiences.

WHAT:

Class discusses the patient experience that occurs from the morning you come into Baystate Medical Center, through your surgery, your post-operative care, up until you return home.

WHEN: 

 

Every Wednesday, 10 - 11:30 a.m.

WHERE: 

Baystate Medical Center, Daly 6-2 Classroom

 

YOU'LL LEARN: 

How we will partner with you to:

  • Manage your pain
  • Care for you and your chest tubes, dressings & incision

 

Practical exercises for:

  • Coughing and deep breathing
  • Using an Incentive Spirometer
  • Re-expanding your lungs after surgery and general anesthesia.

HOW TO ENROLL: 

When the doctor’s office staff schedules your surgery, they will also schedule you for this important class to provide you the education necessary for an optimal patient experience. The Daly 6-2 nurses look forward to meeting you!

 

PARKING AND OTHER DETAILS: 

When you come in for Pre-Admission Evaluation in the Chestnut Building, you will have a complete health assessment done. You will also have your blood drawn, EKG & chest x-ray done, if needed. 

 

You may have a short wait until 10:00am when the class starts.  A nurse from Daly 6-2 will escort you from the Chestnut Building to the Daly Building for class and return you to the Chestnut Building at the end of the class.
