Baystate CT Scanning has modern, state-of-the-art, multi-slice CT scanners, including the first 64-slice CT scanner in Western Massachusetts. These allow the rapid acquisition of multiple images in a matter of seconds with an overall decreased dose of radiation compared with older conventional scanners. We also have taken special steps to further reduce the dose for pediatric patients.
We maintain 24-hour coverage sevens days a week for inpatients and referrals from the Emergency Department.
Appointments, usually ordered or coordinated by a physician, are scheduled through central booking, 413-794-2222.
Some patients may need to drink oral contrast prior to coming for their scan. Please remember to bring any physician orders with you.
If you are scheduled for an appointment, after registering, you will be directed to the CT desk and greeted by our secretary, who will notify the technologist that you have arrived for your appointment.
You will sit in a waiting room until a technician arrives to take you in for your CT scan. The waiting time will depend on several factors, including whether or not you need to be given drinks for abdominal scanning or if there are emergencies, biopsies or other procedures which have to take precedence. We do try our best to perform your scan as soon as possible.
The technician will explain the procedure to you and answer your questions.
Depending on the type of examination, you may need an intravenous line so we can inject a dye to better enable us to visualize your internal structures.
Once you are actually on the CT table, the examination time averages only about several minutes for most procedures, usually no more than 5-10 minutes, with the exception of interventional procedures such as drainages or biopsies.
Once your scan is completed, you will return to the reception area and may go home.
Your scan will be interpreted by a board certified radiologist and who will report findings to your physician.
Depending on the body area of your CT scan, you may receive specific instruction on how to prepare for your scan. Be sure to follow any instructions given by your physician or by staff when you make your appointment.
We aim for the best service possible in the CT Division. Please feel free to share any comments or feedback with us. Most procedures are scheduled through the main Booking Office, but if you have any specific questions, you can call the CT reception area at 413-794-4661.
