Baystate Midwifery and Women's Health

25 Years and over 10,000 births

Baystate Midwifery and Women’s Health is a full scope midwifery practice, begun in 1985.  Over the last 25 years, our nurse-midwives have delivered over 10,000 babies.  With over 125 years of accumulated clinical experience, they have a long tradition of caring for women in the greater Springfield area.

National health care studies report several advantages of nurse-midwifery care, including higher birth weights for babies, lower infant mortality, and lower episiotomy and childbirth laceration rates.  Studies also show that women who use nurse-midwives have a higher rate of vaginal births compared to Cesarean births.  Baystate Midwifery and Women’s Health has a Cesarean birth rate of only 9-10 percent, compared with the hospital and US average of over 30 percent.  We also provide care for women who have had a previous Cesarean section and desire a vaginal birth. • Family planning and birth control
  • Pap smears and pelvic exams
  • Breast exams
  • Colposcopy

Our nurse-midwives counsel you through out you pregnancy to help you make informed decisions about your health care, prepare you for a safe and satisfying birthing experience, help you best cope with the pain of delivery, and offer guidance about health and nutrition, as well as newborn and postnatal care.

We are committed to providing care that is physically and emotionally supportive, and involves family and friends as you wish.  We believe in helping you create a birthing environment that is calm, empowering, and supportive of the natural process of labor.  We encourage you and your family to include elements of your own cultures and traditions in you pregnancy and birth experiences.

We provide the information you need to make decisions about your baby’s birth, from your preferred methods of pain relief and anesthesia, to the labor positions you’d like to try, and who you would like to have in the room during birth.
