BFMC Classes for Expectant and New Parents

Making informed decisions about giving birth at The Birthplace at Franklin Medical Center will help make the experience everything you want it to be.   From early pregnancy, through labor and delivery, and then caring for your infant, knowledge about birth and infant care will give you confidence, peace of mind and assurance that you are doing the best for your baby.


To enable you to make these decisions and take an active role in your baby’s birth, we offer a series of classes and workshops that cover most aspects of the birth experience and infant care.  Partners and other family members are also welcome at many of the classes.

Preparing for Birth

This 5 week series, taught by certified instructors, offers education for the final months of pregnancy as well as preparation for labor and birth. Come and tour the Birthplace and meet other parents preparing to welcome their babies. Participants will receive comprehensive, evidence - based information about labor and learn practical skills for giving birth with confidence.

This series is recommended for people who have never attended a childbirth class.

Birthing Your Baby – Express Class

This one-day express class, offered by Childbirth Education Center, is taught by a doula and ICEA certified educator with 20 years’ experience teaching over 1600 couples from more than 70 countries.  This is a comprehensive, woman-centered, evidence-based, interactive, and FUN class focusing on building confidence for your upcoming birth.  Women remember their birth experiences for the rest of their lives.  Join us for the journey of a lifetime.

The Science & Soul of Birth: Evidence-based care for heartfelt people

This class, taught by a certified educator and professional doula, emphasizes knowledge-building and informed decision making. We’ll connect with other families and discuss the emotional changes you'll encounter as your family grows. Find freedom of choice based on knowledge of alternatives as you learn about all the options available to you.

Birthing from Within

This class is based on the best-selling and ground-breaking book, Birthing from within, and may be taken alone or in addition to any other childbirth class.  Birthing from within will teach you to make informed decisions, mindfully create your birth space, and welcome your baby.  In this class, you will learn self-hypnosis, visualizations, and techniques to cope with pain and give birth in awareness, prepare for birth as a rite of passage, and receive the support you need! 


Class Schedule: Monthly - One-day weekend immersion class, 9:30 a.m. -4:30 p.m.

Breastfeeding Class

This workshop will give you the confidence you need for a successful breastfeeding experience. Your partner is welcome and encouraged to attend. You will learn:


  • how to prepare yourself for breastfeeding before birth,        
  • practical feeding techniques for returning to work and social life,  
  • how to create and maintain a relaxing breastfeeding environment.

Breastfeeding Support Group

Breastfeeding support group is a wonderful opportunity to meet with other breastfeeding mothers and seek advice from our expert lactation consultants. One on one time with our lactation consultant is provided as well as group discussion of the challenges and benefits of breastfeeding.


Support Group Schedule:  Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  in the OB Classroom at the Birthplace 164 High Street, Greenfield MA.  No registration is required



Ask a Pediatrician and Car Seat Safety Class

Come and meet Dr. Orlando Sola Gomez, pediatrician at Greenfield Pediatrics.  Dr. Sola Gomez will offer advice about newborn care and answer any questions you’d like to ask. 


The first 30 minutes of the class will include an overview of car seat safety by JoAnn Newton,  Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.


Class Schedule:  The second Tuesday of every month from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.

Infant Massage

This class offers a series of easy, proven techniques for massaging your baby which can enhance the bond between you and baby, reduce stress, fussing and colic.


Class schedule:  3 Week class series, 1 ¼ hour classes on selected dates and times.

Birthplace Tour/Sibling Tour

We welcome you to take a free tour of The Birthplace and meet our experienced, caring staff.  We will review birthing options, nursing care, and answer any questions you might have.

Birth Plan Visit

We look forward to meeting with you before your birth so we can introduce ourselves, give you a tour of the Birthplace and discuss your individual birth plan.  We’ll review your health history and complete forms and paperwork so that you won’t be distracted during your labor.  The interview takes about 45 minutes.  We recommend you schedule your visit any time after your 36th week of pregnancy.

Aromatherapy Class

Aromatherapy has been used to help women deal with the pain and stress of pregnancy and birth throughout time. Participants will learn how to use essential oils to help deal with common issues in pregnancy and safe essential oils for birth. At the second class you will receive a custom made massage oil with the perfect essential oils just for you.

Prenatal Yoga

This unique class just for pregnant women blends pain-coping techniques and community building with prenatal yoga to offer you an experience unlike any other.  

In Prenatal Yoga, you will learn how to:

  • Feel comfortable (and sometimes even radiant!) in your body throughout your pregnancy,
  • Be prepared to cope with the pain and intensity of labor,
  • Journey into the unknown with confidence, awareness, and self-compassion,
  • Awaken to yourself as a mother, and
  • Connect with a community of other new mothers!

Schedule: Sundays, 10-11:30am.  Classes taught in seven-week series.

Postnatal Yoga

Caring for an infant can be hard work, and you deserve to take excellent care of yourself as well!  Join our Postnatal Yoga class and begin to feel like yourself again!

In your Postnatal Yoga class, you will:

  • Create time for yourself while keeping your baby engaged,
  • Feel at home in your body once more,
  • Release tension from your entire body,
  • Strengthen your body to support your new role in life,
  • And...create community with other new mamas!!

Our Postnatal Yoga class also includes baby yoga movements to help babies sleep better, improve digestion, relieve fussy emotions, and build self-confidence. 


Schedule:  Mondays, 9:30-11am.  Classes are taught as multiple-class series.  For moms and babies 6 weeks and older.

Developmental FUNdamentals; movement for baby's brain and body

A Movement Class for babies, expecting parents and parents with infants in the first year, to learn the natural movement sequence every infant needs to complete. Through play, this gentle and supportive class builds a foundation for optimal brain and body development.


This is a weekly class supporting you and your baby to

• Enjoy tummy time/why it is important

• Go through the proper developmental stages

• Identify and correct bad habits

Baby Sign Language

This unique workshop will teach you the tools and techniques of communicating with your baby before he/she can talk.  By teaching your child gestures or signs as well as spoken words, they are more quickly able to understand and communicate with the world around them.

Child Car Seat Clinic

Learn about proper care seat installation and have your child’s car seat inspected by a Certified Child Passenger Safety Technician.
