We also have an Endoscopy Unit, where we perform endoscopic examination of the GI tract (upper endoscopy, colonoscopy, endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and small bowel enteroscopy).  Other procedures available from our service include wireless capsule endoscopy, high-resolution esophageal manometry, and esophageal pH testing.  Our areas of research include quality of care in decompensated cirrhosis of the liver, natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), endoscopic outcomes research, and new applications of endoscopic ultrasound.

We provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment for patients with diseases of the gastrointestinal track and liver.

Research

Our faculty are active in research involving the care of patients with chronic liver disease, ultra-minimally invasive endoscopic surgery of the GI tract, methods to control GI bleeding, and endoscopic outcomes research.  We teach surgical residents how to perform endoscopy, and we instruct medical students, medicine residents, and medicine/pediatric residents in the diagnosis and management of gastrointestinal diseases.

Additionally, our areas of endoscopic research include quality of care in decompensated cirrhosis of the liver, natural-orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (NOTES), endoscopic outcomes research, and new applications of endoscopic ultrasound.

Recognitions & Awards

Our division is the only GI division in New England actively engaged in natural orifice surgery in humans.  We are currently the only site that offers per-oral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) for the treatment of achalasia in all of New England.  Our faculty have received 4 grants for research in gastrointestinal and liver diseases.
