- Nationwide, every minute three gallons of donated blood are transfused to American patients, saving 4.5 million lives a year.

- Because the blood supply depends on volunteer donors, shortages of blood are especially acute at holiday times:
- When donors have other priorities.
- There is greater need due to more road accidents.
