Protecting Patients from Harm

Baystate Health’s Protecting Patients From Harm campaign is based on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s (IHI) 100,000 Lives and Saving 5 Million Lives From Harm campaigns, in combination with the Improvement Map.  The campaigns were based on the conviction that if proven interventions are reliably applied on a wide enough scale, many deaths and healthcare related errors that occur while patients are in hospitals could be avoided.

Through adoption of this campaign, Baystate Health has observed lower than expected mortality rates, as well as decreased rates of patient harm, hospital-acquired conditions and infections – some areas going over 1 year without a harm occurrence, such as a ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) or blood stream infection (BSI).  This great work has been key to Baystate Health facilities receiving numerous awards for quality, safety, performance improvement, and patient satisfaction.
