Baystate Medical Practices – Greenfield Gastroenterology, has added two new clinicians to its staff: Shelley Rahn, MD, of Florence, Mass., and a Ronald Kelter, PA-C, of Shelburne, Mass. The practice is headed by gastroenterologist, Pikeshkumar Patel, MD.

Dr. Rahn is working part-time in Greenfield, available weekly in BFMC’s Endoscopy unit to perform endoscopic procedures.  She also serves as the medical director at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, in Enfield, Connecticut.  A graduate of the SUNY Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Rahn completed her internship and residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, and her fellowship in gastroenterology and nutrition at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York.

“As the medical director at an insurance company, I am not directly involved with patient care,” said Dr. Rahn.  “I missed that contact, so practiced per diem at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield.  When I heard that Baystate Franklin needed an additional gastroenterologist, I was delighted to be able to step into this position.”

Mr. Kelter, who has been practicing as a physician assistant since 1994, comes to Baystate Franklin from Valley Medical Group in Greenfield, where he served as both a physician assistant and an acupuncturist.  He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology and Sociology from Clark University in Worcester, Mass.; completed his physician assistant program at Northeastern University in Boston; and graduated from the New England School of Acupuncture in Watertown, MA.

In the Greenfield Gastroenterology practice, Kelter sees patients for office-based exams and follow-ups. He is also working on expanding the practice’s Hepatitis C services.  “There is quite a need for these services in the Franklin County area, and the treatment can be extensive, taking 6-12 months,” explained Kelter.  “As I work with Dr. Patel to expand our Hepatitis-C program, patients will be able to receive these services more conveniently, closer to home.”

Nancy LeClair, practice manager for Greenfield Gastroenterology, noted, “During the past year, our patient base has almost doubled, so we are grateful to have Dr. Rahn and Mr. Kelter join our team. “Dr. Rahn will be exclusively performing endoscopic procedures one day a week at Baystate Franklin.  This will relieve the pressure on Dr. Patel, who has been practicing alone until now. With these two additional clinicians on our team, we will be able to serve our patients much more quickly, both in the office and at the hospital,” added LeClair.  “We have already been able to greatly reduce the wait time for scheduling colonoscopies.”

The clinical staff at the practice also includes and Susan Fairbanks, RN, and medical assistant, Willow Nash.
