The Wesson Women and Infants' Unit at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, MA is devoted exclusively to women's health needs, family-centered childbirth, and newborn care. We offer a safe, nurturing environment, backed with the most up-to-date technology and medical advances, including the region's only Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and high-risk perinatal referral center.
Almost 4,500 babies are born each year at Wesson Women and Infants' Unit. The Labor/Delivery/Recovery/Postpartum Unit (LDRP) is a 38 adult bed, 40 infant bed unit located on the first floor of the Wesson Building at Baystate Medical Center. Each of the 38 adult rooms is private. Patients requiring isolation for airborne respiratory disease are admitted to one of our two isolation rooms; patients requiring special accommodations for physical access are admitted to one of our two universally-accessible rooms. Two separate isolation nursery beds exist for newborns requiring such specialized care.
An operating suite of three operating rooms and an adjoining four bed Post Anesthesia Care Unit are located in the center of the LDRP unit. Wesson 2 is a 29 adult bed, 16 infant bed unit located on the second floor of the Wesson Building. Although the rooms are semi-private, they are typically used for a single family at a time. Out of necessity, when our census exceeds our private capacity, the rooms are used as semi-private accommodations. An examination room is available on the unit. The unit provides inpatient, family-centered antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum care, including high risk obstetrical and wellborn newborn care.
Inpatient care and teaching is provided to patients and their families from admission to discharge. Our Breastfeeding Support Program can provide you with breastpumps, specialty breastfeeding products and expert consultations.
The WWIU functions with a strong commitment to our family-centered philosophy of care.
