Baystate Pediatric Surgery was formed in July 2011 when Pediatric Surgical Services merged with Baystate Medical Practices. Pediatric Surgical Services was founded in 1969 by Dr. Richard Courtney. Dr. Sachs joined the practice in 1971. They were the first board certified pediatric surgeons in western Massachusetts. The practice now performs over 2,200 operations per year. We provide comprehensive pediatric surgical care to infants, children, and adolescents in the region. Services provided include state of the art neonatal surgery, minimally invasive surgery including laparoscopy and thoracoscopy, abdominal surgery, thoracic surgery, oncologic surgery, head and neck surgery, urologic surgery, and trauma surgery.
Baystate Pediatric Surgery is a division within Baystate Medical Center's Department of Surgery. We provide 24/7 surgical coverage at Baystate Children's Hospital, the Western Massachusetts Teaching Hospital for Tufts University School of Medicine. Baystate Children's Hospital has a 55 bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a 10 Bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, a 35 bed Infant and Children's Unit, and a 10 bed Adolescent Unit. Baystate Children’s Hospital is a Level II pediatric trauma center, the only pediatric trauma center in western Massachusetts. The practice also runs a chest wall clinic at Shriner's Hospital in Springfield in which children with various chest wall abnormalities are evaluated and treated with both non-operative and surgical reconstructive procedures.
The surgeons all have faculty appointments in surgery at Tufts University School of Medicine, Boston, MA. We are actively involved in the surgical and pediatric residency training programs at Baystate Medical Center. We serve on numerous committees within the Baystate Health. Our merger with Baystate Medical Practices will allow the practice to continue to provide outstanding clinical service combined with academic excellence.
