Baystate Medical Center is the only American College of Surgeons-Committee on Trauma verified Level 1 Trauma Center in Western Massachusetts. Baystate Medical Center provides the highest level of expert trauma care available in Western Massachusetts to patients of all ages. Annually, Trauma Services responds to approximately 2,200 patients at Baystate.
Level I designation means that Baystate Medical Center meets the highest standards set by the American College of Surgeons-Committee on Trauma, is a tertiary care facility (highest referral level) and a regional resource for trauma care. It affirms that Baystate Medical Center has the necessary personnel, facilities and equipment to provide specialized care to the most critically injured patients. In addition to seeing injured patients, surgeons within the department see general surgery problems, both in the Emergency Department and in their clinic offices.
Regardless of their need (pediatric, neuro-surgical, orthopedic, etc.) or whether they require the intensive care unit (ICU) or care on a nursing unit, seriously injured patients at BMC can rely on receiving outstanding care that they would not be able to receive anywhere else in western Massachusetts.
The Trauma Center is fully staffed with:
Board certified trauma surgeons, Emergency Medicine physicians, rehabilitation and medicine specialists
