Baystate Medical Center's Emergency & Trauma Center is here for emergencies from minor to major, for every broken bone, for every traumatic injury requiring top-flight, 24/7 medical expertise. When injury or illness strikes, we're ready. When children and hurt or fall, we provide comfort, kindness, and quiet competence.
At Baystate Children’s Hospital, we know that kids are not just little adults. They have unique needs, especially when it comes to emergency care. Our Sadowsky Family Pediatric Emergency Department – staffed with board certified pediatric emergency specialists – is the only one of its kind in western Massachusetts. It includes:
- a separate triage and waiting area, separate from the adult emergency room;
- 18 treatment rooms for the privacy and comfort of children and their families;
- dedicated children's imaging, assessment, and resuscitation areas; and
- Child Life specialists, who help children and their families understand what is happening through play, support, and education.
The Sadowsky Family Pediatric Emergency Department opened in December 2012 as part of the broader expansion of Baystate Medical Center’s Emergency Department. It is the region’s only dedicated pediatric triage and urgent-care area for young people up to age 21.
With colorful and playful décor and accents, including child-sized furniture, the children’s ED is intended to make kids feel comforted, soothed and safe even amid urgent health challenges. And of course, The Wellies, Baystate Children’s Hospital’s animated ambassadors of health and wellness, are also part of the experience.
Level 1 Trauma Center
Our Emergency Department’s impact extends beyond Baystate Medical Center. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, we take care of patients from throughout western Massachusetts. A Level I Trauma Center increases the chances of survival for a seriously injured patient by an estimated 20 to 25 percent. As the only Level 1 Trauma Center in western Massachusetts, we provide the most comprehensive surgical care to trauma patients 24/7, including children, adolescents, and young adults. One of our trauma rooms is outfitted especially for pediatric patients.
