As the Chair of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Niels Rathlev is responsible for planning, operations, finances, quality, research and education in the department.
Prior to coming to Baystate Medical Center in 2008, Dr. Rathlev served as Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine at Boston University and Boston Medical Center for ten years . Previous roles included Chief of Emergency Medicine at Carney Hospital in Boston and Program Director for the Residency Training Program at Boston Medical Center. He is a recipient of the “Outstanding Faculty Award” and “Chair’s Award” from the Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine.
Dr Rathlev received a BS from Duke University, Magna Cum Laude and his MD from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in internal medicine at Boston City Hospital. He is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Emergency Medicine. Dr Rathlev is a Professor of Emergency Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine and is a member of the national Association of Academic Chairs of Emergency Medicine. He currently serves on the Executive Council and Board of Directors of the Massachusetts College of Emergency Medicine.
