Minimally Invasive Surgery Curriculum

Rotation on this service provides the opportunity to learn the principles of advanced minimally invasive surgery, as well as management of specific clinical problems using laparoscopic surgical techniques. Residents on this service are given the opportunity to learn anatomy as visualized during laparoscopy, and acquire experience in laparoscopic manipulative skills. The latter is developed during structured practice in the minimally invasive surgical skills lab using a virtual reality training device, and in the clinical operating room under the direction of experienced advanced laparoscopic surgeons. This rotation is structured to enable the minimally invasive fellow to learn at a more advanced level, while providing surgical residents enhance learning opportunities in the surgical management of patients with morbid obesity, complex hernias, gastroesophageal reflux, and colon diseases amenable to laparoscopic treatment.
