Message From the Pediatrics Program Director

Dr. Laura KoenigsThank you for your interest in the Baystate Medical Center/Tufts University School of Medicine Pediatrics Residency Program.  We are very proud of our residency and our residents; we offer a balanced, comprehensive program that provides a strong foundation for our graduates whether they enter general pediatrics practice or go on for further fellowship training.  Our residents hone their skills in life-long learning in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Baystate Children’s Hospital encompasses all of the pediatric services at Baystate Medical Center - a large tertiary care medical center serving all of Western Massachusetts.  Baystate Medical Center is the largest of the Tufts teaching hospitals and lives by its operating principles of trust, respect, integrity, communication and collaboration.  In the Children’s Hospital we have a strong emphasis on teamwork and family-centered care which permeates everything that we do. The services we provide include a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the only Pediatric ICU in the region, a vibrant inpatient service run by a fantastic hospitalist group, and a number of general pediatric and subspecialty outpatient services.  Our resident continuity clinic is the primary care site for a diverse population.  We are committed to improving the health of our community.

At Baystate we pride ourselves on the lack of hierarchy within our training program.  We are all life-long learners and we learn from everyone with whom we work – that is the “Baystate way.” Our residents are junior Tufts faculty and are recognized by the Tufts medical students for their superb teaching.

Our call schedule uses innovative shifts of afternoon and night teams to increase patient continuity while conforming to work hour restrictions. We work hard to maximize learning while decreasing fatigue and stress while we demand excellence in patient care. Teamwork is highly valued.  We recognize that our residents have lives outside the hospital and we have supports in place to help them through this potentially stressful time in their careers. We take better care of our patients when we take care of ourselves.

Western Massachusetts is a wonderful area in which to work and play.  Our program gives our residents the opportunity to work with a caring, committed group of residents, faculty, and other team members in a stimulating environment.  Come see for yourself what a great place this is to become a pediatrician.

Sincerely,

Laura M. Koenigs, MD
