Pediatric Neurology

Goals

This elective is designed to provide the necessary skills to recognize, evaluate, and manage children with common neurological disorders and to enable the student to learn when a referral to a pediatric neurologist is advisable.  The student’s experience will include ambulatory, general inpatient and intensive care settings, both pediatric and neonatal.

Objectives

The student will…

  • serve as the primary contact for consultations requested from the pediatric neurology service.
  • perform a neurologic evaluation including history and physical for all children admitted to the pediatric neurology service.
  • foster independent thinking and synthesis of information by reviewing findings with the consulting neurologist for diagnostic formulation, discussion, and recommendations.
  • perform in-depth literature searches on problems encountered on the rotation.
  • experience management of patients with multidisciplinary relationships with the departments of Nursing, Psychiatry, Psychology, Social Service, Neurosurgery, and Rehabilitation including speech pathology, audiology, occupational therapy, physical and special education.
  • interact routinely with the departments of radiology, especially CT and MRI scanning, clinical neurophysiology including electroencephalography, evoked potentials, ambulatory EEG, video EEG and polysomnography and pediatric neurosurgery. 
  • participate in a written pre and post rotation examination, similar in format to the Board examinations, to assess fund of knowledge and progress.
  • participate in an in-person correction of examination and feedback session with the Elective Director.
  • attend daily inpatient rounds and consultations of inpatients, weekly Pediatric Grand Rounds, neuroradiology conferences, appropriate journal clubs and any other related conferences. 
  • participate in outpatient practice visits
