Emergency Medicine Ultrasonography

Director: Elizabeth Schoenfeld, MD

Location: Baystate Medical Center, 759 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA

Goals

This elective will provide an introduction to the bedside use of ultrasound in the emergency department.   At the end of this elective students will be able to use the ultrasound to acquire appropriate images.

Objectives

The student will…

  • receive didactic teaching provided in lecture form both in person and online covering the basic areas of ED ultrasound: the FAST exam, cardiac ultrasound, early pregnancy ultrasound, biliary ultrasound, renal ultrasound, and aortic ultrasound.
  • scan patients in the ED, and participate in scanning rounds with the residents, fellows and ultrasound attendings.
  • complete an average of 10 exams in each of the above areas, as well as one in three of any of the following areas: DVT,  IVC, soft tissue, ocular, thoracic, or musculoskeletal.
  • select one ultrasound related journal article of their own choosing to present to the ultrasound team during conference, and they will give one 10-20 minute presentation on a case or topic of their choice within emergency ultrasound.
  • have the option of working 2 clinical shifts during their month if they are interested in more experience or interested in having one of our faculty write them a letter.

Students going into emergency medicine will receive a letter specifying the number of high quality scans they have done in each area that they can take with them to their residency.
