Cardiac Surgery

Objectives

The student will…

  • receive an introduction to adult cardiac disease requiring surgical intervention and invasive cardiac diagnostic studies. 
  • perform preoperative evaluation.
  • be involved in postoperative cardiac and pulmonary care.
  • be involved in the decision making process for or against operation in each individual patient
  • gain experience in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, surgical and cardiology wards, and the operating -- theater. 
  • follow patients from admission through catheterization and operation as well as participating in their post-operative care.

* One or two weekend calls with a cardiac surgical physician assistant or nurse practitioner (who cover our service  24/7).  Call will cover the cardiac surgery ICU and telemetry floors providing postoperative care, and writing progress notes in medical record.
