Objectives
The student will…
- receive an introduction to adult cardiac disease requiring surgical intervention and invasive cardiac diagnostic studies.
- perform preoperative evaluation.
- be involved in postoperative cardiac and pulmonary care.
- be involved in the decision making process for or against operation in each individual patient
- gain experience in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, surgical and cardiology wards, and the operating -- theater.
- follow patients from admission through catheterization and operation as well as participating in their post-operative care.
* One or two weekend calls with a cardiac surgical physician assistant or nurse practitioner (who cover our service 24/7). Call will cover the cardiac surgery ICU and telemetry floors providing postoperative care, and writing progress notes in medical record.
