Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship ABEM Curriculum

2 Year Curriculum for Fellows seeking certification from the American Board of Emergency Medicine

Year 1

Six months are spent within the pediatric emergency department. The first month includes didactic sessions of core emergent pediatric emergency medicine topics. A procedure lab is given during the subspecialty resident's first year.


One month is spent in each of the following rotations:

  • pediatric intensive care

  • neonatal intensive care

  • pediatric anesthesia

  • inpatient pediatrics

  • pediatric ambulatory care.
    The ambulatory care month includes exposure to the subspecialty clinics which are cardiology, gastroenterology pulmonology, ophthalmology and endocrinology.


One month of elective time is spent in a core pediatric emergency medicine specialty such as pediatric surgery, cardiology, infectious disease, pulmonology or gastroenterology. A toxicology elective is also offered and encouraged for the subspecialty residents without prior toxicology education.

Year 2

Eight months are spent within the pediatric emergency department.


One month is spent in each of the following:

  • pediatric intensive care unit

  • combined emergency medicine systems education and pediatric abuse education.


Two months of elective time are also given. Elective rotations are chosen by subspecialty residents in conjunction with the fellowship director with emphasis placed on the subspecialty residents specific educational needs.
