Emergency Ultrasonography Fellowship

The Baystate Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship is a one year position open to board certified/board eligible emergency physicians who have completed an EM residency.  The fellowship focuses on refining and expanding basic ultrasound skills gained in residency and learning new applications.  Ultrasound program development is stressed, as are the development of teaching skills.  The main goal is to provide the emergency physician with all the tools necessary to be an effective emergency ultrasound director.

The Baystate Emergency Department is located in a busy, high-acuity Level 1 tertiary care center that sees over 115,000 emergency visits a year.  In addition the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship, the Baystate emergency department also includes an emergency medicine residency, pediatric emergency medicine fellowship and an emergency medicine medical student rotation.

  • The Baystate EUS fellowship stresses proficiency at basic ultrasound exams including trauma, abdominal, basic echo, and pelvic sonography.  Sophisticated applications in thoracic, vascular, critical care ultrasound and advanced echocardiography are taught, including use in undifferentiated  hypotension, respiratory distress and cardiac arrest.
  • The Baystate EUS fellowship focuses heavily on teaching.  The fellow gives frequent lectures to residents, medical students, and faculty during the year.  In addition, the fellowship provides an opportunity to travel and lecture nationally.  The fellow will also build a large digital teaching database of ultrasound images to be used in future lectures.
  • Knowledge of ultrasound program development is crucial for a  graduating fellow.  With this in mind, the Baystate EUS fellowship emphasizes instruction in multiple aspects of program development, including QA processes, hardware/network integration, documentation, billing, and purchasing of ultrasound machines. 

In addition, Emergency Medicine fellows are allowed to pick up moonlighting shifts at the attending rate.
