Research Affiliations & Accreditations

Strong partnerships with other research organizations allow us to further our institutional commitment to the Advancement of Knowledge. Our collaborations enable Baystate Health to better support the innovative research of our investigators and to improve the lives of the people in the communities we serve. Baystate Medical Center is an active participant in the research communities of Massachusetts and a member institution of the state and regional organizations that also promote the goals of biomedical research. Many of our physicians, researchers, and leaders also serve in leadership roles with our affiliates, which include the following organizations.

Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc.

ALTThe Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs, Inc. (AAHRPP) promotes high-quality research through an accreditation process that helps organizations worldwide strengthen their human research protection programs (HRPPs).

An independent, non-profit accrediting body, AAHRPP uses a voluntary, peer-driven, educational model to ensure that HRPPs meet rigorous standards for quality and protection. To earn accreditation, organizations must provide tangible evidence—through policies, procedures, and practices—of their commitment to scientifically and ethically sound research and to continuous improvement.

As the "gold seal," AAHRPP accreditation offers assurances—to research participants, researchers, sponsors, government regulators, and the general public—that an HRPP is focused first and foremost on excellence.

Tufts Clinical and Translational Science Institute

ALTThe Tufts CTSI was established in August 2008 with a grant (The Clinical and Translational Science Awards, CTSA) from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Tufts CTSI’s promotion of collaborative, cross-disciplinary, full-spectrum translational research will have a substantial impact on how research is done, at Tufts and beyond. The CTSI reflects Tufts' unique emphasis on community in biomedical research by including multiple hospitals and health plans, industry leaders, community organizations, and other participants who share our vision, in Massachusetts and nationally.

The Tufts CTSI spans all the schools of Tufts University, its affiliated hospitals across Massachusetts and Maine, participating universities, community organizations, and non-profit and for-profit organizations. The Tufts CTSI is the home of support and education aimed at transforming research across all its participating organizations. This includes the CTSI Portal and the MS/PhD Clinical Research Program at the Tufts University Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences.

University of Massachusetts Amherst

ALTWith the University of Massachusetts Amherst nearby, Baystate Medical Center is able to take advantage of the full research capabilities of a major research university to engage in biomedical translational research. Baystate Medical Center and the University of Massachusetts Amherst have partnered to create the Pioneer Valley Life Sciences Institute, an independent biomedical research institute located in Springfield that fosters interdisciplinary and inter-institutional research.

American Association for Laboratory Animal Science

ALTThe Baystate Animal Care Facility is a member of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), which is dedicated to serving society through education and the advancement of responsible and humane care and treatment of laboratory animals and quality research that leads to scientific gains that benefit people and animals.

Massachusetts Society for Medical Research

ALTThe Massachusetts Society for Medical Research (MSMR) promotes and enhances biomedical and biological research, including the humane care and use of animals, for the improved health and well-being of people, animals, and the environment. The goal of MSMR is to foster a better understanding of biomedicine by improving basic literacy in and enthusiasm for the biological sciences among the public, the media, and future generations.

Massachussetts Technology Collaborative (MTC)

ALTThe Massachusetts Technology Collaborative is an initiative of the Massachusetts Technology Park Corporation (MTPC), an independent instrumentality of the Commonwealth created in 1982 to advance the growth of the technology sector of the Massachusetts economy through collaborative activities among industry, universities and state government.

Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council

ALTFounded in 1996, the Economic Development Council successfully brings together the three-county, Western Massachusetts region's public and private leadership with one voice to create a positive environment for responsible economic growth. Centralized coordination, effective collaboration, and comprehensive professional services are its unifying foundation.

Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG)

ALT The Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) was established in 1955 as one of the first cooperative groups launched to perform multi-center cancer clinical trials. Funded primarily by the National Cancer Institute (NCI), ECOG has evolved from a five member consortium of institutions on the East Coast to one of the largest clinical cancer research organizations in the United States, with almost 6000 physicians, nurses, pharmacists, statisticians, and clinical research associates (CRAs) from the United States, Canada, and South Africa. Institutional members include universities, medical centers, Community Clinical Oncology Programs (CCOPs), and Cooperative Group Outreach Programs (CGOPs). These institutions work toward the common goal of controlling, effectively treating, and ultimately curing cancer. Research results are provided to the world-wide medical community through scientific publications and professional meetings.

Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG)

ALTThe Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG) is a non-profit organization with the purpose of promoting excellence in the quality and integrity of clinical and basic scientific research in the field of Gynecologic malignancies. The Group is committed to maintaining the highest standards in clinical trials development, execution, analysis and distribution of results. Continuous evaluation of our processes is utilized in order to constantly improve the quality of patient care.

Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG)

ALTThe Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) is a national clinical cooperative group funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) since 1968 to increase the survival and improve the quality of life of patients diagnosed with cancer. The primary areas of research for RTOG investigators are: brain tumors, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, cancers of the gastrointestinal system (esophagus, rectum, anal canal and stomach), genitourinary tract cancers (bladder and prostate), sarcomas, gynecologic cancer (cervix) and breast cancer. The Group consists of both clinical and laboratory investigators from institutions across the United States and Canada and includes in its membership the majority of all NCI-designated comprehensive and clinical cancer centers.

The Association of University Technology Managers

ALTThe Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) has more than 350 members worldwide, including universities, research institutions, teaching hospitals and government agencies, and hundreds of companies that manage and license innovations derived from academic and nonprofit research. It supports members in facilitating the commercialization of their research results, generating income and promoting economic growth, and rewarding, retaining and recruiting faculty.

Massachusetts Association of Technology Transfer Offices (MATTO)

MATTO promotes efficient and effective transfer of knowledge and technology developed at academic institutions in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to companies that will develop and bring novel products to market for the public good.
